Kaley Cuoco insists she hasn’t always been one to cry easily.

But becoming a mom to her 8-month-old daughter Matilda with partner Tom Pelphrey changed that tune entirely.

“Tom and I were sitting with Matilda the other day, and she was literally staring at us, and she touched both of our faces, and just gave us this innocent, just really joyful, ‘Hi’ smile,” Cuoco, 38, tells PEOPLE for this week’s issue.

“I mean, I could cry right now,” she continues. “We both looked at each other and we started tearing up. He goes, ‘Is this our life now, where we just cry at everything she does?’ ”

The former Big Bang Theory star recently shared a sweet video on her Instagram Story to kick off the holidays — her daughter’s first Thanksgiving. Cuoco, who next stars in the Prime Video film Role Play, sat with Matilda on her lap, repeating the word “mama” as the infant giggled and squirmed. The actress then turned to look at something else for a second, and Matilda said, “Mmmm … mama mama mama.” In response, the proud mom was completely shocked: “Mama?! What?! You just said Mama! What was that?” and planted kisses all over her baby girl.

Cuoco, who just launched her line of eco-friendly dog products, Oh Norman!, spoke to PEOPLE in October about her daughter also bonding with their four dogs rescue dogs, Ruby, Opal, King and Blue.

“Oh my God, she got thrown to the wolves literally,” Cuoco said. “After she was born, I’m like, ‘If this child doesn’t like dogs, I might have to send her back. There’s no choice. This is your life. This is it.’ ”

She added, “They have jumped on her. They have crawled across her. We have let them lick her, kiss her. Our pediatrician was like, ‘It’s okay.’ So they love her so much.”

Kaley Cuoco and Tom Pelphrey were a week into their relationship when they heard someone call the name “Matilda.”

“We looked at each other and it was like, ‘Would it be crazy to say if we had a baby we’d name her Matilda?’” Cuoco tells TODAY.com in an interview. “You know when you first start dating and you’re so obsessed, and you’re planning your future children. It was that sort of thing.”

Cuoco and “Ozark” star Pelphrey met at the red carpet premiere of the Netflix drama in April 2022. Six months later, the couple announced they were expecting their first child together.

“When we got pregnant and we learned we were having a girl, we were like, ‘Oh my God — we have the name,” Cuoco recalls. “We actually kept her name a complete secret until she was born.”

“And it’s so her. She’s such a Matilda,” Cuoco adds.

Matilda Carmine Richie Pelphrey came into the world on March 30. “We are overjoyed and grateful for this little miracle,” Cuoco wrote on Instagram at the time.

“Tommypelphrey, didn’t think I could fall even more in love with you, but I did,” she added.

The “Flight Attendant” actor says she was happy with her child-free life until she met Pelphrey. During a conversation with Emmy Magazine in May, Cuoco said that motherhood had been “not a goal of mine.”

“As a young girl I dreamed of it, but I became involved in my career,” she explained. Then, Pelphrey came along and everything changed. Suddenly, she said, all she wanted was a baby.

“It was instantaneous, ‘Oh my God, I want to have a kid with you,’” she recalled.

Matilda, now 7 months old, could follow in her parents’ footsteps and pursue an acting career.

“It’s in her genes; I don’t know how she won’t,” Cuoco told Emmy Magazine. “The child already thinks she’s the star of everything.”

Cuoco opened up exclusively to TODAY.com about Matilda’s name while promoting her partnership with Brooks Running. The “Big Bang Theory” alum credits the brand’s Ghost Max series for relieving her foot pain.

“I worked out late into my pregnancy and my feet started hurting aggressively. I would go to bed crying at night. And my partner, Tom, has been wearing Brooks for years, and he was like, ‘Dude, you need to get on the Brooks train,’” Cuoco says. “Well, I bought my first pair and it was a game changer. Now it’s all I wear. They saved my feet.”

Earlier this year, Cuoco revealed she was suffering from “Mommy wrist” or “mommy thumb,” officially known as de Quervain tenosynovitis. The condition occurs with repetitive movements such as lifting, carrying or nursing an infant, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Dogged ambition. Kaley Cuoco is known for starring on The Big Bang Theory and The Flight Attendant—and for her love of animals as a dog owner and equestrian. So as the actor considered opportunities for her own brand, she knew right away which category she wanted to be in: pet care.

Cuoco’s new pet care brand Oh Norman! launches today, five months after it was first announced. The brand raised $3 million in funding from investors including Midnight Venture Partners, Everywhere Ventures, and Freedom Trail Capital, Fortune is the first to report. It’s led by Cuoco’s cofounder and CEO Katie Hunt, a former chief brand officer for the dating app Hinge and an early Warby Parker employee.

Oh Norman! is named for Cuoco’s late dog Norman; her production company also carries the animal’s name. For now, the startup sells only products for dogs, although Hunt and Cuoco say they want to expand to products for other animals. The first products include dog bowls and placemats, as well as two $35 liquid supplements to stop itching and support calm behavior in dogs. The company plans to donate a portion of sales to animal rescue organizations.

Cuoco’s ultimate goal, she told me over Zoom yesterday, is to build “the Honest Company for pets,” a safe-ingredient-focused pet brand inspired by Jessica Alba’s baby care line.

The comparison has some potential. The baby care and nutrition industries were transformed as ingredient-conscious millennials became parents, and millennials are also known for caring for their pets like children. Today, however, pet ownership rates have stabilized after the pandemic’s surge, and pet owners have been hit hard by inflation.

Oh Norman! is Cuoco’s first brand of her own and represents the first time she was involved in the fundraising process. “This is a whole new thing for me,” she says. “I was like, ‘Is this what Shark Tank feels like?’”

She leaves running the business to Hunt, but she’s a hands-on founder in other ways. Cuoco ate the brand’s melatonin-and-chamomile calming supplement called “Calm the eff down!” before she gave it to her dog. (She now has four rescue dogs on her ranch in southern California.) “I was fine,” she says. “In fact, I was very relaxed.”

The pet care industry is on track to become a $500 billion market globally by 2030 and reach $200 billion in the U.S. by that time, according to Bloomberg Intelligence.

“When you pair that growth in the pet space with such an authentic voice with such a large following”—Cuoco has 7.9 million Instagram followers—“It’s hard to dispute there’s going to be traction,” Hunt says. Combine those forces with the “millennial female shopper who is looking for products that don’t exist on the market and is actively already involved with Kaley, following her career” and “you can actually change the market.”
